Since this version of the message boards is still up, I'm going to go ahead and post the questions for the first week of Game 29, so that players can have the normal amount of time to work on your answers.

It's my understanding that, if everything goes the way Mike hopes it will, this version of the Civil War Talk message boards will be replaced by a new version later this weekend. I think we will still be able to access this version of the boards for reference, but I'm not totally sure.

So, if a new set of message boards goes into operation, I will repeat these questions on the new trivia games board.

If anyone wants to post answers to these questions on this board, I'll do my best to make sure they are properly scored. However, to be on the safe side, I would recommend checking in next week and, if the new version of the boards is operating, post your answers on the new board (even if you've already posted them here).

Clear as mud?

OK, here are the questions.

1. To impede the advance of Union troops against Yorktown in May 1862, this Confederate general deployed the first subterra shells (land mines) of the Civil War. Name him.

2. According to the 1860 U.S. Census, which city had the largest population of any city in the eleven states that eventually became the CSA?

3. Who was the seniormost Union Native American officer of the Civil War?

4. Though the Union Army’s Ordnance Department declined to purchase any Gatling guns, one general purchased several out of his own pocket and personally opened fire with a Gatling gun on at least one occasion. Name him.

5. (Two point question) To what two countries did the United States of America extend diplomatic recognition on June 5, 1862?

New players are welcome to join the game at any time.

For those of you who've been playing right along, the rules are probably very familiar by now, but if we have any newbies, see the thread titled "Trivia Game 28 - Rules." The rules for Game 29 are going to be exactly the same.

For now, I'm going to assume that the message boards, either the new or the old version, will be running smoothly by next Saturday. If that is the case, answer to the Week 1 questions will be due by 6:00 PM next Saturday, February 19. If problems crop up and I see a need to postpone that deadline, I'll do my best to let everybody know.

Good luck!

Default Update 2/22/05

Here's an update on where things stand with the trivia game.

I had expected that when the new version of the boards went into effect, anything that had been posted and approved on the old version would go away. I figured that, after Mike got done with all his updating this past weekend, I would have to recreate the post with all the questions for Week 1 of Game #29. For that reason, I postponed the deadline for people to submit their answers until 6 PM Eastern time this coming Saturday, Feb. 26.

The good news is, I don't have to recreate my post. My original post with the questions for Week 1 of Game #29 is still up and apparently will remain so.

The bad news is, I don't know whether anybody submitted their answers for Week 1 before Mike made the switch. There are currently no posts in the queue waiting approval. Mike said he is not sure whether that is because nobody made any posts before he made the switch, or because the posts that were in the queue at the time of the switch got lost in the transition. He's going to try to investigate tonight. If he can find any posts floating around in limbo, he'll try to get them back into the queue.

But if any of you did post answers last week before Mike made the switch, it might be a good idea for you to post them again, just in case Mike can't find them and restore them this evening.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I hope that, after we get through Week 1, the game will run as smoothly as it has in the past.
