1. Johnston and Sherman.

2. Department #6 of the Confederate States Laboratory. 3/13/1863.

3. <strike>One of those hard questions. (Hard = I don't know the answer) There are lots of famous arty units. The wars served indicate a Regular Army unit. My best guess is 4th US Light Arty. (Battery B?)</strike>

4. <strike>Another hard question. Helm was Col. of the 1st Ky. Cav. CSA at Shiloh. The only thing that I can come up with is he didn't surrender with several companies of his Regt. at Cornith.</strike>

5. He was imprisoned, without trial, for duration of the war.

Here are the answers to the Week 1 questions.

1. The generals who met at Bennett House were William T. Sherman and Joseph E. Johnston. (Sorry, Felinelady, I can't give you credit for "Johnson." There were several Confederate generals named Johnson, but none of them was involved in this meeting.)

2. The disastrous explosion in 1863 was at the Confederate States Laboratory on Brown's Island.

3. The question asked for a famous Civil War artillery unit that had served in the Mexican War and would go on to serve in the Spanish-American War and both World Wars. The answer I had was the Washington Artillery (a Confederate unit). Since the wording of the question did not specify "Confederate," I am also accepting the 109th Field Artillery and 128th Field Artillery, since I have been able to confirm that both of those units served in all the indicated wars. Unfortunately for those of you who answered "4th Battalion, 1st Artillery," although I have been able to confirm that it served in four of the five wars in question, I have not been able to find any source indicating that that unit served in the first World War.

4. General Helm made the dreadful mistake of reporting that Gen. Don Carlos Buell was moving toward Decatur, AL, instead of toward Pittsburg Landing to join Grant at the Battle of Shiloh. I accepted the one answer that said Helm reported Buell was moving toward Huntsville, since that's in the same direction.

5. Pro-Union Alabama delegate Christopher Sheats was taken from the floor of the secession convention in Montgomery and imprisoned for arguing against secession. Basically, I was looking for the answer "He was imprisoned." One person responded that he was imprisoned for the duration of the war, another responded that he was imprisoned and then released when Alabama seceded. Obviously, both these answers cannot be correct, but I haven't been able to confirm the length of Sheats' imprisonment, so I'm going to give credit for both answers. I would remind all players, however, that if you give me too much information and I can confirm that part of it is wrong, I will have to mark the whole answer wrong.

All ten players in the first week did pretty well. We had five with the maximum score of 6, three others scored 5, and the other two scored 4.

Here are the scores at the end of Week 1.

Sockknitter 6
Raggedrebel 6
Cindyscoops 6
Bill_torrens 6
Caller 6
Dawna 5
Traveller 5
Texaswildcat 5
Felinelady 4
Rivrrat 4
