We'll be resuming the regular game next week. The first set of questions will be posted on January 1.

For those who are interested, I'll post another question asking you to give me a list of items this week.

The question this week is - Name the 14 top turning points of the Civil War.

Again, this is a very subjective question and there are no "right" or "wrong" answers. You are free to name whatever you feel are the top 14 turning points of the war. If you wish, all 14 can be points at which the war turned in the Union's favor - or all 14 can be points at which the war turned in the Confederacy's favor - or you can include both. The list Thea has given me includes both.

Please post responses by 6 PM EST on January 1.

New Year's resolution - no list questions during the holidays this year.

Looks like the list questions weren't especially popular, but thanks to Jackbluelight and Texaswildcat for trying your hand. A particularly warm welcome to Texaswildcat for making this question your first venture onto Civil War Talk's message boards.

Here is the list Thea gave me, which she gleaned from The Civil War Book of Lists. Note that it is not in chronological order.

1. U. S. Grant given commission of Lieutenant General on 9 March 1864 and appointed head general in command of all Union armies.

2. Robert E. Lee appointed to succeed J. E. Johnston as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia on 31 May 1862.

3. Battle of Gettysburg, 1-3 July 1863.

4. Battle of First Bull Run, 21 July 1861.

5. Battle of Antietam, 17 September 1862.

6. Grant takes Vicksburg, 4 July 1863.

7. Appointment of John Bell Hood to succeed Joe Johnston as commander of Army of Tennessee, 17 July 1864.

8. Buell arrives at Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh) to save Grant 6 April 1862.

9. Death of Stonewall Jackson, 10 May 1863.

10. USS Monitor faces CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads, 9 March 1864.

11. Death of Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston at Shiloh, 6 April 1862.

12. New Orleans surrenders to Capt. David Farragut, 25 April 1862.

13. Fall of Atlanta to Federal forces, 2 Sept. 1864.

14. Fall of Nashville to Federal forces, Feb. 1862.

I hope both of you will give it a shot in Game #28, for which the first week's questions have already been posted.
