Here are the correct answers to the questions for Week 2.

6. James Longstreet almost bled to death from friendly fire he took at the Wilderness.

7. U.S. Grant was the only general in American history to capture three separate armies.

8. Dr. Phineas D. Gurley preached the sermon at Abraham Lincoln’s state funeral in Washington. Matthew Simpson preached at Lincoln’s funeral in Springfield.

9. Columbia, SC has a mansion that once belonged to Gen. Wade Hampton.

10. After he was wounded in the right shoulder, Gen. Joe Johnston’s biggest concern was about his sword, which his father had given to him after using it in the Revolutionary War. His first concern on being wounded was that an aide retrieve the sword and care for its safety.

The intent was that Question 8 should refer to Lincoln’s state funeral, and if the question had been worded that way, Phineas Gurley would have been the only correct answer. However, since nothing in the question specified “state funeral” or “funeral in Washington,” I have accepted Matthew Simpson as a correct answer also.

The correct answer to Question 10, as given to me by Mike, is what is shown above – that Johnston’s first concern was for his sword. A number of you responded that he was concerned not only about his sword but also about his pistols. Since so many of you agreed on that point, I’ll accept that answer.

However, I’m curious. I can understand why Johnston would have been concerned about a Revolutionary War sword given to him by his father. It’s not readily apparent to me why he might have been equally concerned about the pistols, unless his father gave those to him, as well.

The good thing about this trivia game is that it gives an opportunity to learn more about the Civil War, and that opportunity is not only for the contestants, but the moderator as well. I’m going to start a separate thread on the Campfire Chat board asking why Johnston would have been so concerned about the pistols. If any of you (or any other members of Civil War Talk) has an explanation, I’d be interesting in hearing it.

Scores at the end of Week 2:
