War Service 1861 recruited a regiment in East Tennessee, June 1861 Col. of 3rd Tennessee, First Manassas, September 1862 Brig. Gen., commanded Vaughan’s Bde/Smith’s Divn in Vicksburg campaign (s), command of cavalry brigade in eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia, Piedmont, commanded Vaughan’s Bde/Breckenridge’s Divn in Early's Washington raid, Shenandoah Valley campaign (w), command of Confederate forces in East Tennessee, escorted President Davis in his flight.
Post War Career Presiding officer in Tennessee senate.
