Died August 29 1880, off Cape Canaveral FL
Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1855, frontier duty, Seminole war, Utah expedition.
War Service February 1861 1st Lt. in 5th US Infantry, September 1861 Col. of 1st New Jersey, Peninsula campaign, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/VI Corps at Second Bull Run, South Mountain (w), Antietam, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/VI Corps at Gettysburg, commanded 1st Divn/Cavalry Corps in Overland campaign, commanded Cavalry Corps in Middle Military Divn, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Cedar Creek.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. September 9 1864, Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865.
Post War Career Resigned US Army 1866, minor diplomat, businessman.
