Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1838, worked on seacoast defences, Mexican War, resigned 1848, planter, militia officer, as state chief of ordnance ensured that the state was well-armed.
War Service 1861 engineer-in-chief of Morris Is. defences, Capt. then Maj. on Beauregard's staff, October 1861 Brig. Gen. in command of Dept. of Middle and Eastern Florida, divisional command under A S Johnston, Corinth, relieved of command, commanded Dept. of South Carolina, administrative duties in South Carolina.
