Rainbow Bluff Rainbow Bluff, a high point along the Roanoke River just upriver from Hamilton, NC. It was the site of the aborted attempt to seize the Confederate battery that was stationed on its heights, protecting the river, in conjunction with the attack on Fort Fisher, NC in December of 1864. The naval forces, led by Commander W.H. Macomb, and the land forces, led by Colonel Jones Frankle, were unable to reach the Bluffs as a coordinated attack was thwarted by Confederate torpedoes. The USS Bazeley and the USS Otsego were both lost in the attempt.
