OGLESBY, Richard James "Uncle Dick"
Born July 25 1824, Oldham Cty KY
Died April 24 1899, Elkhart IL
Pre-War Profession Farmhand, carpenter, lawyer, Mexican war, gold prospector, politician.
War Service April 1861 Col. of 8th Illinois, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn at Fts Henry and Donelson, March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn at the battle of Corinth (w), November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded a division in west Tennessee and north Mississippi, resigned May 1864.
Post War Career Governor of Illinois, lawyer, US senator.
