Born February 9 1826, Jackson Cty IL
Died December 26 1886, District of Columbia
Pre-War Profession Mexican war, lawyer, politician, US congressman.
War Service 1861 First Bull Run, raised the 31st Illinois - September 1861 Col., Belmont, Fort Donelson (w), March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn at Corinth, November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn/XVII Corps in Vicksburg campaign - Medal of Honor, commanded XV Corps in Atlanta campaign, Dallas GA (w), returned to Illinois for 1864 election, commanded his corps in Carolinas campaign.
Post War Career US congressman, US senator, writer.
Notes Credited with having the idea of Memorial Day.
