Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn/XVII Corps in Vicksburg campaign - Medal of Honor, commanded XV Corps in Atlanta campaign, Dallas GA (w), returned to Illinois for 1864 election, commanded his corps in Carolinas campaign.
