LEE, George Washington Custis CSA


Born September 16 1832, Fortress Monroe VA
Died February 18 1913, Fairfax Cty VA
Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1854 (first in his class), engineer duties, resigned May 1861.
War Service July 1861 Capt. of engineers, built fortifications around Richmond, staff of President Davis, June 1863 Brig. Gen., October 1864 Maj. Gen., commanded G W Lee’s Divn in retreat from Petersburg, Sayler's Creek (s).
Post War Career Teacher at VMI, president of Washington and Lee College.
Notes Eldest son of R E Lee. Was uncertain about accepting field command
