War Service 1861 organised the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves (the "Bucktails", also known as the 42nd Pennsylvania) - Lt. Col., Dranesville (w), Shenandoah Valley campaign, Harrisonburg (w,c), September 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn/XII Corps at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, resigned due to ill health November 1863.
