KEARNY, Philip USA


Born June 2 1815, New York NY
Died September 1 1862, Chantilly VA
Pre-War Profession Travelled, joined US Army as 2nd Lt in 1st Dragoons, attended French Cavalry School, served in Algiers, Mexican War, served in California, resigned from the army in 1851, served in Napoleon III's Imperial Guard in Italy.
War Service May 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Divn/III Corps in Peninsula campaign, Seven Pines, July 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Second Bull Run campaign, Chantilly (k).
Notes He originated the "Kearny patch", the forerunner of corps badges.
