Died January 21 1898, Ogden UT
Pre-War Profession Teacher, farmer, doctor, Mexican War.
War Service June 1861 Col. of 14th Indiana, Cheat Mountain, Greenbrier, commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/V Corps in Shenandoah Valley campaign, commanded Shields' division at Kernstown, April 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/3rd Divn/II Corps at Antietam, Fredericksburg (w), commanded 3rd Divn/XVI Corps in the siege of Vicksburg, commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/IV Corps in Atlanta campaign, commanded 1st Divn/IV Corps at Atlanta, Franklin, Nashville.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. February 1 1865.
Post War Career State treasurer, politician, surveyor general of Utah, postmaster.
Notes At Kernstown, he inflicted a rare defeat on T J Jackson.
