KNIPE, Joseph Farmer USA


Born March 30 1823, Mount Joy PA
Died August 18 1901, Harrisburg PA
Pre-War Profession Shoemaker, enlisted in US Army 1842, Mexican War, resigned 1848, railroad employee.
War Service 1861 brigade inspector of Pennsylvania militia, October 1861 Col. of 46th Pennsylvania, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Cedar Mountain (c), commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/XII Corps at Antietam, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Chancellorsville, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/XX Corps in Atlanta campaign, commanded 7th Divn/Cavalry Corps at Nashville.
Post War Career Postmaster, occupied a number of state and federal posts.
