KIRKLAND, William Whedbee CSA


Born February 13 1833, Hillsboro NC
Died May 12 1915, Washington DC
Pre-War Profession Entered West Point in 1852 but did not graduate, commissioned US Marine Corps 1855, resigned 1860.
War Service 1861 Capt., Col. of 21st North Carolina, First Manassas, Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign, First Winchester (w), chief of staff to Cleburne at Murfreesboro, returned to his regiment before Gettysburg, August 1863 Brig. Gen. in Heth's division, Bristoe Station (w), Wilderness, Spotsylvania, wounded near Gaines' Mill, transferred to North Carolina, Fort Fisher, Bentonville.
Post War Career Commission agent, postal official.
