Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1843, Mexican War, served in the Pacific Northwest.
War Service September 1861 Col. of 4th California, acting inspector general of the Army of the Tennessee, March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Divn/Army of West Tennessee in siege of Corinth, acting inspector general of the Army of the Ohio, commanded 3rd Divn/XXIII Corps during Morgan's raid into Ohio, served in administrative capacity for the rest of the War.
