Pre-War Profession Lawyer, newspaper editor, politician, commissioner of patents, US postmaster general, US secretary of war.
War Service September 1862 appointed judge advocate general with rank of Col., June 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.A.March 13 1865.
Post War Career Army service as judge advocate general, retired 1875.
