Died
February 11 1889, WashingtonDC
Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1839, artillery service.
War Service May 1861 Maj. in 5th US Artillery, First Manassas, chief of artillery in Washington defences, commanded artillery reserve in Peninsula campaign, Malvern Hill, September 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, chief of artillery in Army of the Potomac, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, commanded siege operations at Petersburg.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V.
July 6 1864, Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865, Maj. Gen. U.S.A.March 13 1865.
Post War Career Army service in the artillery, retired 1883, governor of soldiers' home.
Notes A fine artillerist, who fought to have his guns operate independently from infantry commanders.
