HUMPHREYS, Benjamin Grubb CSA


Born August 24 or 26 1808, Claiborne Cty MS
Died December 20 1882, Leflore Cty MS
Pre-War Profession West Point - entered 1825 but dismissed following a riot in 1826, lawyer, farmer, politician.
War Service 1861 raised a company in 21st Mississippi, Capt., September 1861 Col., Seven Days, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, August 1863 Brig. Gen., commanded Humphreys’ Bde/McLaws’ Divn at Chickamauga, Knoxville, commanded Humphreys’ Bde/in Kershaw's Divn in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Berryville (w), commanded a military district in Mississippi.
Post War Career Governor of Mississippi, insurance agent, planter.
