GAMBLE, William
Born January 1 1818, Duross, Cty Tyrone, Ireland
Died December 20 1866, Virgin Bay, Nicaragua
Pre-War Profession Civil engineer, 1838 emigrated to US, enlisted in US Army, honorably discharged 1843, civil engineer.
War Service September 1861 Lt. Col. of 8th Illinois Cavalry, December 1862 Col., Peninsula campaign, Malvern Hill (w), Fredericksburg, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/Cavalry Corps at Gettysburg, commanded cavalry in Dept. of Washington, September 1865 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers.
Brevet Promotions Brig. Gen. U.S.V. December 14 1864.
Post War Career Army service in the cavalry, died of cholera en route to California.
