Pre-War Profession Teacher, lawyer.
War Service August 1861 Maj. of 5th Vermont, Lt. Col., Seven Days, September 1862 Col., Fredericksburg (w), commanded the "Old Vermont Brigade" (2nd Bde/2nd Divn/VI Corps) at Chancellorsville - Medal of Honor, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Cedar Creek, April 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Petersburg (w).
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. October 19 1864.
Post War Career Assistant US Secretary of War.
