Born March 17 1832, nr Lanesville IN
Died May 28 1895, Washington DC
Pre-War Profession Teacher, clerk, lawyer, politician.
War Service September 1861 Lt. Col. of 38th Indiana, March 1862 Col. of 53rd Indiana, Vicksburg campaign, August 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 4th Divn/XVIII Corps in Atlanta campaign (w), the wound ended his career.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. March 13 1865.
Post War Career Lawyer, Postmaster General, Secretary of the Treasury, judge, Secretary of State.
