Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/III Corps in Peninsula campaign, Groveton, Second Bull Run, commanded 4th Divn/XIX Corps in Dept. of the Gulf, Port Hudson, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek (w), commanded Dist. of Savannah.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. October 19 1864, Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865.
