FRÉMONT, John Charles
Born January 21 1813, Savannah GA
Died July 13 1890, New York NY
Pre-War Profession Teacher, 1838 appointed to US Army as topographical engineer, explorer, resigned 1848 following court martial for mutiny, US senator, Presidential candidate.
War Service May 1861 appointed Maj. Gen. in Regular Army, commanded Dept of the West, relieved of duty after issuing an emancipation proclamation in 1861, 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign, relieved at his own request when ordered to serve under Gen. Pope.
Post War Career Territorial governor of Arizona.
