Gen. of Volunteers, instruction duty, commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/III Corps at Second Bull Run (w), commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/I Corps at South Mountain, Antietam (w), resigned January 1863 because he had been passed over.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. March 13 1865.
