DAVIS, William George Mackey CSA


Born May 9 1812, Portsmouth VA
Died March 11 1898, Alexandria VA
Pre-War Profession Sailor, journalist, editor, cotton speculator, judge.
War Service January 1862 Col. of 1st Florida (which he recruited and equipped), elected to Confederate Congress, served in Tennessee, November 1862 Brig. Gen., commanded the Dept. of East Tennessee, May 1863 resigned, lived in Richmond, operated a fleet of blockade runners from Wilmington NC.
