War Service May 1861 Col. of 18th US Infantry as a reward for organising regiments of Ohio militia, served in Western Virginia, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, supervised recruitment activities, suppressed "disloyal" citizens in Indiana and Ohio.
Post War Career Army service as an Indian fighter, college professor, author, Indian treaty negotiator.
