Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 27th Bde/7th Divn/Army of the Ohio, commanded divisions in the Army of Kentucky and Army of the Cumberland, commanded 1st Divn/XIV Corps at Chickamauga, commanded 3rd Divn at Missionary Ridge, Atlanta campaign, Jonesboro - Medal of Honor, March to the Sea, Carolinas campaign.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. September 1 1864, Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865.
Post War Career Army service as inspector general, retired US Army 1888.
