Pre-War Profession Apprentice weaver, lawyer, politician, US congressman, Mexican war, US senator.
War Service 1861 raised a "California Regiment", the 71st Pennsylvania - Col., September 1861 appointed Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Ball's Bluff (k).
Notes He had not accepted the appointment at the time of his death. A friend of Pres. Lincoln.
