Born May 19 1815, Sheffield MA
Died May 14 1882, Detroit MI
Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1833, engineer duty, built coastal defences, Mexican war, superintendent of West Point, writer on engineering and science.
War Service 1861 Maj. in construction of the defences of Washington, Bull Run campaign, September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, chief engineer of Army of the Potomac, conducted the siege of Yorktown, in charge of Washington defences, chief engineer of Grant's armies when he came East, commanded siege operations at Petersburg, Appomattox.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. July 4 1864, Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865.
Post War Career Army service, worked on coastal defences, writer and historian, retired 1881.
