Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1856, frontier duty in cavalry (killed Kiowa Chief Big Pawnee), instructor at West Point.
War Service September 1861 Col. of 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry, Washington defences, fought in Shenandoah Valley during Jackson's campaign, April 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers and chief of cavalry in III Corps, Cedar Mountain, Fredericksburg
