War Service April 1861 raised a company in 3rd Ohio, Lt. Col. , served in Western Virginia, February 1862 Col., served in Tennessee, Perryville, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/1st Divn/XIV Corps at Stone's River, Tullahoma, Chickamauga, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn/XIV Corps at Chattanooga, Knoxville, resigned commission January 1864.
Post War Career Banker, US congressman, historian, author.
Notes He resigned his commission so that his brother could join the army.
