Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/1st Divn/XIV Corps at Stone's River, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/XIV Corps at Chickamauga, commanded 3rd Bde/3rd Divn/IV Corps at Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta campaign, commanded 3rd Divn/IV Corps at Franklin, Nashville.
