War Service May 1861 Maj. in 4th Connecticut (later renamed 1st Heavy Artillery), February 1862 recruited 13th Connecticut - Col., New Orleans, commanded 3rd Bde/4th Divn/XIX Corps, Port Hudson, September 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn/XIX Corps in Red River campaign, commanded 1st Bde/Groves' Divn in Carolinas campaign.
