BREAKING NEWS: After literally YEARS of hard work CivilWarTalk is finally being upgraded to a Content Management System (CMS)! The exact publishing date is yet undetermined, but we hope to have the new site up and running on or before the new year!
Also our Annual DECEMBER DONATION DRIVE is gearing up again, details at the bottom of this post....
What is a CMS? I'm so glad you asked! First let me explain why the old system needs to be changed...
The current CWT site contains literally thousands of text based documents that were hand coded and uploaded by me to our web site. This huge Resource Center (formerly the Archive) has become a huge problem to keep up to date. I just don't have the time to make changes and add new content like I used to, and I also haven't been able to do the routine maintenance I've needed to.
One other issue I've been concerned about, it seems that many of our message board users don't know what we have in our Resource Center, and also many researchers who visit the site never discover our message boards. I needed a system that could tie these areas together so that everyone will enjoy our entire site.
To make life easier I started to research CMS systems, these web applications are literally giant database storage programs that hold and fetch documents for all kinds of users on the web. I tried about four of these programs before I found one that met all of my requirements.
My main requirement was integration with our current message board system, which I am happy to announce will not be changing very much at all. You get to keep all your current CWT logins and passwords.
So after a few hundred long nights and quite a few late night snacks, I've finally got the new system up, running, and filled with current and new Research Center content. I have a few bugs to work out and a bit more content to add, but I'm just a few weeks, perhaps even days away from publishing the whole new site.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU? Well, it means that CivilWarTalk is still growing, and striving to be the best Civil War web site it can be. CivilWarTalk will be able to provide more content, more articles, more news and information for the Civil War researcher. We also hope to encourage our researchers to visit our message board more often and our message board users to check out our articles and information. What's more, is that you will soon be able to help build our growing archive of information!
THE DECEMBER DONATION DRIVE: It's time again to ask for your support in our annual donation drive to fund CWT. I love to run this web site and want to keep it running for many years to come. However, I still have a limited budget for the site. Without your donations it becomes very difficult to keep this site online. I hope you'll consider participating in this drive, our goal this year is $300. We will be accepting PayPal donations as always, as well as US Postal Service mailed donations. If you need my new
NEW JERSEY mailing address, please email me, or better yet > send me a Dispatch Depot Private Message, and I'll send it to you with payment instructions.
