I find it ironic that in a thread expressing a need for consideration and politeness, in the name of that end, three posts assert that politeness is a southern trait and a regional difference. Ironic.

Actually Cedarstripper judging from the amount of hate mail i've reeived over the last year... I know that there are quite a few Southerners who are polite and full of deceny and ethical standards. I've personally experianced Southern hospitality and think pretty highly of it when I see it but I also fully realize that there are some pretty great people in the North too.

Members like Steven Cone, Dawna, Larry and others who might be accused of being Southern Patriots are some of the nicest people I have had the pleasure to deal w/ on the net. Unfortunetly those who are less than polite or tactful have a tendency to paint a negative picture for a whole region; the same is true for those of the Northern persuasion.

WE must all remember to judge an individual, instead of the region they come from. THere are good men who are white, black, Indian, Asian etc... prejudging someone because of the color of their skin is ignorant. Prejudging someone because they are Northern or Southern is equally foolish. I work w/ a man who grew up in the Atlanta area but now resides in Wisconsin, is he any less a Southerner than Thea or Mobileboy? I spent most of a decade in the South and live now in the North... while no one is likely to confuse me for a Southerner I think I have some valid opinions of life in the South... especially being married to a SC native.

As someone who has had one post censored for flaming (albeit that wasn't the intention behind it), and who has had some robust exchanges of opinion with adversaries, I can't honestly say that I feel any guilt about how those adversaries took what I dished out. They are old enough and feisty enough to look after themselves. And they have certainly dished it out to me.

But I do feel guilty about the possibility of having discouraged onlookers from participating. I feel really quite penitent about that. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

Must do better.

I'm sure the South is full of such people, but I must confess I'm puzzled....how do you determine that from "hate mail"?

I too have lived in the South (central Texas) and got to know many fine friends. I also met (and worked with) some of the sleeziest scoundrels I have yet to see their equals. Longitude is not a determining factor of character, and I submit that the culturalism that once may have allowed one to spot a southerner or northerner in a group is today constantly being dilluted by national, and even international communication, entertainment, and travel that is part of all of our daily lives. Today, our kids grow up here, go to college there, and go to live in probably a number of different states. I can hop in the car and be in the South in a matter of hours. To me, the term Yankee and Southerner are becoming as meaningless as trying to decide if Halle Berry is black or white. Who really should care, and how is it productive?

The flip side of claiming that southerners would never do something such as insult or denigrate (even though they can and do), is to imply that northerners therefore are the ones doing it. And why not.....northernes are inherently rude, right? Well, that's wrong. And we're not necessarily urban either. If you'd like to see a very small town in upstate NY where the cows definitely far outnumber the 4,000 residents, come visit me. The leaves are beautiful right now.

I was just commenting that despite the hate mail I've received from a particular member of this board I know that there are quite a few good people south of the Mason Dixon line. Thankfully though, I think the haters outnumbered by the good souls. Always have been always will be.

Halle Berry is the reason most boys go thru puberty, white or black... who bloody cares. The proper term is eye candy.

Indeed there are some unrefined souls on this board. I just put my first person on my ignore list. Didn't think I'd ever do that. But what does one do with an immature, rude ignoramus? Not to mention uninformed. I've always been taught to be polite and respectful of others even when they're full of shiite. What is it about civility that eludes some folks?
