A Question, please:

Can members donate funds to help defray the costs to the Owners/Administrators?

Forgive me if this question is answered already on the FAQ's. I looked but could not find the answer.

Thank You,
Alabaman (Rob Adams)

Hey Everyone,
I think what leads to a lot of problems is the fact that we type the messages rather than saying them.In conversation you can say something which by tone ,body language, expression ,etch... expresses a different meaning than the words alone. That being the case sometimes I think we possibly derive an entirely different meanig or attitude than we would in actual conversation. Also where I'm from poeple don't generally communicate in the same way as everyone on here does.Poeple in Alabama generally don't assert that the other person is all wrong(even if they are)because it is considered rude and can be unhealthy. It is also insulting and communicates a superiority complex while that may not have been what was intended to be communicated at all .Just my thoughts everyone.

- Ashley, you nailed it perfectly! It is the case in my area, and I think in much of the rural South. Maybe our regional differences are coming into play, and we don't even realize it. Of course, there are some instances where it IS rudeness, and in a few cases, meanness.

Either way, a very astute observation on your part.

Regards,

John W.

I moderate at several boards myself and have preached that it is healthy to disagree as it promotes thought and creativity. Without room to disagree, we become a PC oriented society. This can lead to either right wing facism or left wing extremism. The end result is no different as both are oppressive. So, while it is healthy to disagree, it is unacceptable to personally attack another individual solely because (s)he is not of the same opinion. Disagree, but on issues and not personalities. Never allow it to become personal. We are, after all, suppose to be a polite society.

Ami & the other staff here, Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah! I salute you guys for the fine work you do here and for providing this forum.

Gary,
I propose a THREE CHEERS! and a thunderous REBEL YELL! for the SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY! ;-)

I'm testing your fine comment on banishing personal attack/summarily dismissal of others' posts by my statement above, and ALL Members' listening & comprehension ability, while personally agreeing to abide faithfully. :-)

Yours,
Alabaman (Rob Adams)

Rob,

I will gladly give the three cheers and a rebel yell, if you will give three huzzas and chorus of the Battle Hym of the Republic for the Union and Honest Abe.

I agree wholeheartedly with MobileBoy's assessment of our current situation. What he has said about people from Alabama, I think also applies to almost every Southerner: we never have believed in deliberately insulting someone by saying that they are completely wrong, even if they are. It's considered the heighth of rudeness.

We also don't comment if we think someone's form of humor is not our style. We just don't comment. And we never demean anyone by saying things like idiotic, moronic, ect. Personal attacks are unacceptable in polite society.

I believe if we can all strive to simply be ladies and gentlemen of the first order it isn't too much to ask. This is supposed to be civil conversation, I believe we can police ourselves to make this a better board. I certainly hope so.

As I've stated in the past, and others have as well, there are so many lurkers out there, who look at what we say to each other and then make a decision: can I voice my opinions or will I be belittled by some of these people?

I am quite sure there are many people out there who have so much to offer us but are frankly afraid to speak up for fear of ridicule.

Here's a suggestion: If you feel you absolutely have to be argumentative with another poster, do it in the form of private email. Don't subject the whole group to it. It's not productive. And it allows the board to stay on a standard that we can all support.
