Trivia Game # 62 - Week 5
Here are the questions for Week 5 of Game # 62 (Six questions this week, all count. Throwing out the conventions.)
“Full Circle”
1. This Maryland native who communicated through sign language and the written word (often with a pseudonym) had a first collection of poems published in 1864. Name the poet/journalist.
2. The town in which the person in Question 1 went to school was the county seat of a county which asserted it’s independence in 1861. When the county was threatened by invasion by a Union backed state militia, a former state legislator led a citizen army of his own to defend the county. Known by the (dubiously deserved) ranks of either colonel or general, he managed to reach an agreement with the Unionist militia whereby he would disband his force if the county was not invaded. This agreement became to be considered by the locals as a “treaty” between the U.S. government and their independent sovereignty. Post war this colonel/general, once again in the state legislature, introduced a bill granting amnesty to an outlaw with a similarly alliterative name. Name the colonel/general.
3. In December, 1863, two members of the U.S. House of Representatives separately introduced legislation which would lead to what would become the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution in over 60 years. Name both of the congressmen.
4. There are several version of what was President Lincoln’s last official act as president:
That he pardoned a soldier who had been sentenced to be shot for desertion; That he (ironically) signed into law the legislation which created the Secret Service; That he ordered that “In God We Trust” be inscribed on all U.S. currency; That he reappointed Alvin Saunders as governor of the Territory of Nebraska; ….
The story in this question involves Lincoln being interrupted, just about to leave the White House for Ford’s Theater, by a U.S. senator who urged the president to pardon a Confederate spy who was scheduled to be executed in the next few days. Name the spy who was allegedly pardoned by Lincoln as his “last official act”.
5. He enlisted as a private on September 9, 1861 in an Ohio cavalry regiment which saw service throughout the war including the end at Appomattox, and was mustered out as a captain on July 11, 1865, but post-war was brevetted major to date from March 13, 1865 “for gallantry and meritorious services at the Battle of Five Forks, Virginia” (at which battle his brother was killed). His diary of his war time experiences was published in 1914. Also post-war he founded (or co-founded, or was instrumental in the founding of) a town named for the person in Question 1, in a North-Western state. Name him and the town.
6. Hope you have been paying attention in your research. In addition to being one of seven Republicans who voted against the impeachment of President Johnson, this man:
-- Ran for U.S. Congress in 1850 to represent the district which included the town and the county referenced in Questions 1 and 2, but was defeated.
-- As a Brigadier-General of a Unionist state militia was a party to the so-called “treaty” in Question 2.
-- Co-authored with the congressmen in Question 3, the legislation which became an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
-- Was the U.S. Senator who, according to legend, on April 14, 1865, urged President Lincoln to pardon the Confederate spy in Question 4.
-- In the 39th Congress served on the Committee on Military Affairs and the Militia which advised and consented to the brevet appointment of the person in Question 5.
Who was he? (A General Court Martial is in order for those who cannot name this guy!)
Answers are due by 6pm (eastern) on Saturday, October 17. Good Luck!

5. Luman Harris Tenney
I found Tenney because I was intrigued by the “founded by a Civil War veteran” reference in this webpage:
http://gupress.gallaudet.edu/reviews/SBJrevw3.html
and found him an interesting character. (That is one thing I love about this job, looking for one thing and finding so many other interesting things along the way.)

One more (big) set of questions, but two weeks in which to post your answers.
Since we have had no volunteer yet, I guess there is no hurry.
(Just for the heck of it, I'd like to nominate Larry for Trivia Mod. He is eminently qualified being a veteran player in both our game and the CWI game.)
Thanks for playing. See you in two weeks!
Sam

Thanks for the thought, it does wonders for my ego, but - I do not question, I reply.
I think General Sherman said it for me. I think this is the way it goes -
"If nominated, I will not run. If elected I will not serve."
Larry
Well, I should have also included the equally qualified sarladaise as a nominee, but thought the time zone thing might have been a problem.
