    Default Buffington Island and Salineville

I really want to visit a Civil War battlefield but can't really take anytime off of work. So me and my brother have been planning a trip to revisit the two battles that are in Southern Ohio. We once visited Buffington Island before they had memorials set up so it will be nice to see what they did with it. The big question is that battle has very detailed directions to get to the preserved land and memorials that exist, Salineville is a whole different story. In my research Salineville is where General Morgan surrendered during his raid in Indiana and Ohio. It was near the town of Salineville but really in Lisbon or West Point. I've heard both towns claim the surrender spot. There is a monument I want to see but can not find its location. I even asked a local college prof. that does research on Morgans Raid and he did not offer me any info. I didn't know if anybody here would know or know of a way to find out.

This picture is taken from the Heidelberg College website that does research on this:

There is even a little information board there and everything I would like to see this!!

Any incite would be most appreciated!

Welcome to the boards here thrash. Good to have you with us and I hope someone can help you with your question. It you haven't been to Louisville, Ky to see the statue commemorating J.H. Morgan that might be someplace you'd want to visit if you can get a long weekend.

    Hi!

Definitely will be visiting some places in KY! And actually I wish Ohio would preserve and keep better track of its Civil War areas like Kentucky does. Kentucky and Indiana has a very well detailed map and areas to visit of Morgans Raid.

    Welcome aboard, Sir!

I also recommend a small Confederate graveyard across the river in Jeffersonville, one of the few in yankeedom. Not too easy to spot though it's shown on the big map down by the river on Riverside Drive. Graves are next to the VFW lodge about a block east of I-65 and a block north of the river. It now looks a lot like a neighborhood ballfield. The graves are the reason it was left undeveloped. Yankees are nice people, most of them. They killed our soldiers, but gave them a nice place to rest.

I'm curious to learn if there was even any fighting in Ohio? Oops, big dummie that I am, I just went back and read your post. Thank you for joining the group.

Thank you for the recommendation! Yeah the only really fighting in Ohio was Morgan's Raid. Small skirmishes and two Class C or even D battles (Buffington Island and Salineville) came from it. Other than Grant and Sherman's house and a few of the other Gen. who became president's their is not much Civil War stuff in Ohio. I still have yet to see Johnson's Island which was a Confederate prison on Lake Erie. The barracks are gone but there is a Confederate cemetery.

Yeah some of use Yankee's are ok ! A handful of use are still Southern Sympathizers. I believe that the South or any State still to this day has the right to legally succeed from the Union but I suppose that discussion is for another thread.

Yep, if you can stay awake long enough, you'll see that the notion of secession has bruises on its head from the discussion here. It's a shame such a horrible war resulted from the effort of a few states, but it's a part of our history and something from which we could learn if given the proper attitude. The South actually doesn't need sympathy, anymore than the North. The war ain't over in some folks minds, though it's well past time for that to occur. We appreciate your interest. Hang in here with us for a few years. Unionblue and his buddies have much more to teach us, I hope.

While we're on the subject of graveyards around the Louisville area, if you get time you might want to visit Cave Hill Cemetery inside the Louisville city limits, right outside downtown. It has a large section for the Union dead, and a smaller section for the Confederates, most graves being on top of a hill. The Union portion flys a US flag, the Confederate portion flys the Stars and Bars. They're open daily til 4pm. Should be real pretty this time of year with all the old trees changing colors.

Somewhere out in that east Louisville area is a large monument to Zachary Taylor, Brownsville if my memory is good, who was president and also father to Lt. Gen. Richard Taylor who surrendered with Forrest in South Alabama May 10, 1865. Richard may be there as well. Don't know.

Hate to resurrect this thread that has been dead for a while but I did find information out about the monument I was looking for. In case anybody else is wondering I read they moved it to private property and is no longer available to the public. How dumb is that if my sources are true.
