    Default Does your family understand?

I was telling my dad about the new market event this past weekend. I had told him about the battle and the rains. I mentioned that I wasn't able to cook supper Saturday evening, because we had very little wood, and what we had was wet. Dad asked me "don't you have one of those gas camping stoves?" "Yes, but I didn't have it with me." "Well, why not? Then you wouldn't have to worry about having wood or it being wet." "umm, they didn't HAVE gas stoves then, Dad." I know what he was thinking, I should have the stove with me as back up, in case it rains. We've also had a discussion about plastic utensils, and paper towels.

My brother understands the "period correctness". He just wants to run across the battlefield yelling "I'm from the future!"

    catspjamas,

My wife certainly does, as she used to go to the field with me and the 17th Mississippi and cook for the entire company. Cooked over a fire, using period cookware, and made everything from stews, fried chicken, pies, you name it, she cooked it.

As for her camping gear, I went to a museum and found a rope bed from the period, and recreated it so she could sleep in a period bed, feather mattress and all.

My daughter understands in her head, but not her heart, and my son-in-law thinks we are a bit odd, but the grandkids love the dressup and the period balls we attend.

As for my parents, they have no clue.

    Sincerely,

We are lucky that our family in Florida understands what we do and how we do it. In fact as soon as my 84 yr old grandfather found out he had my grandma search for a confederate flag to bring us when they came to visit a couple of years ago. My boys are proud of the fact that he got that for them so much that they have it hanging in their bedroom. I just wish they could see us all in action sometime.

If I can ever prove portions of the American Civil War were fought in a Marriott Inn, my wife will be there, likely not until. She has refused, for the most part, to even discuss her two well documented Confederate ancestors with the 15 AL and 51st Georgia for the 29 years she's been giving me directions otherwise. Then, suddenly a few month ago when I announced that I had in fact joined the Sons of Union Veteran of the Civil War, she briefly came to life and said something about a traitor. I'm suspicious she has some Southern pride, after all!

Thanks, Larry. Was wondering how the missus would react to your joining the SUVCW. She has no Union vets in her background? Oh boy! That grandbaby is in for it.

By the way, will plan to stop by the Wayne Township Cemetery to brush the lichens off the stone of James Patterson Cockerham. Is there a friendly way to treat the marker to preserve it?
