The ghost of Confederate General William Whiting is said to roam the ruins of the fort he once commanded. Whiting was mortally wounded in a massive Federal attack on the stronghold in 1864. The embattlement protected the last river route used by the blockade runners to supply Southern troops, and its fall to the North spelled the end of the Confederacy. Whiting's gray-clad figure is seen at dusk on the old parapet, gazing back to the road.

    Default Fort Fisher Ghosts

Not only that, but also there are ghost voices there. A couple years ago, I was camped out for the last big battle scenerio they had at the site and while there I had a ghostly encounter. It being January on the NC coast, it was rightfuly cold. I dont know about the rest of you, but I never sleep too good at cold events. While wide awake, I heard voices and it was about 2:06 in the morning....thats what time the attack was anitiated on the fortifications....there was no one else around me because it was a small event, and only my unit was camped out that night. I bnelieve it was a Friday night, thats why we were the only ones camped at the time. I heard the voices for about four or five minutes before they were cut off by sheer silence.....

He's still waiting for Bragg to send reinforcements.

What can I say? It was the explanation given as to why he is looking up the road towards Wilmington, where Bragg & reinforcements would come from, instead of looking out to sea, where the federal ships could be seen. Whiting repeatedly asked Bragg for reinforcements, Bragg said no.
