    Few take the trouble to understand or to view the American scene with perspective. And we Americans love to find ourselves guilty of something. However, it is never I who am guilty, but those other Americans, the past or present government or the other political party. Americans almost never find other countries guilty. It is always ourselves or our fancied influence in other countries. Louis L'amour

    I did not see any cav trousers in the gray E.O.G. I need to see close up pics of the saddled seat to see how they were sewn.

    I hope to find a pair that was machine sewn back then.

    I'll guess that Confederate mounted trousers were exactly the same as Federat mounted trousers with the difference only in colors and possibly the material. The pattern/design did not differ.

    Just an observation.

    Dear Mark Wadsworth;

    Sir, I don't have the best solution however; on the Library of Congress' web site:

    Both trousers look alike except for the color. I thought that cavalry trousers had leather outside linings in the seat and inside of the legs. Doesn't appear to be so. Custer and Washington were both staff officers at the time and maybe didn't wear lined trousers, despite lots of riding on courier duty.

    Well, here are Stuart's pants, if that helps. Sorry I don't have a picture showing more of the pants themselves. There is no leather lining.

    Flash thought. Stuart was not your ordinary grunt who had to worry about wearing out his trousers in the saddle. The seat getting thin was of no concern.

    I'll confess that I'd never thought of riding pants. I'm familiar with horses and riding, but I never thought about riding 10 hours daily every day. How did the cowboys manage? Did they wear reinforced jeans? And did they turn up the cuffs?

    I need to return to my nap. Sorry about all that.

    Well, Stuart was in the saddle all the time, but when his pants started wearing out, he just wrote to his wife to send him new ones. It's not like he would have been totally bereft. The average private may have been a different story.

    As for cowboys, chaps have a part that wraps around the inside of the upper leg, so that part of your pants would be protected, but they never cover the seat.

    This discussion merits an "expert" opinion. As I am not an "expert" on CW trousers, let me put forth the name of someone who is; Chris Sullivan. Chris runs Stony Brook Clothiers in Oswego, NY. (315.343.1557) He produces "period-correct" trousers and would most certainly be able to answer these questions. Another reference would be the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, VA.

    I looked in Don Troiani's book Civil War and found a image of the 1st NC Cavalry. The trousers appear to much like those in the site above . No inside lining visible. Troiani is noted for the accuracy of the tiniest details in his paintings.

    I need close up photos over the extra layer on the inside of a paor of orginial Confederate trousers. I have to be able to see the stitches. ALso I need to know if the edges were left raw of folded under.
    The Troiani print of the 1st NC Cav does not do any good. Granted I have many of his prints. But I can use his work to use as a basis for one of my garments.
