I have read writing from soldiers in the early years of the civil war and do don't get a sense of dread or any sense of death is looming. Unlike, early WWI writing were dread and death is looming everywhere.
Until, you read writing from soldiers during the Overland campaign in those writing you sense dread and death is looming and it just a matter of time before death comes for you.
Grant literally put the fear of death in everyone during that campaign.
