Time to begin a new game. Rules for Game # 45 will be essentially the same as those for Game # 44. New players are welcome to join the game at any time, but the first week of any game is always an especially good time.
Here are the questions for Week 1 of Game # 45.
1. Prior to the Battle of Shiloh, what general boasted “Tonight we will water our horses in the Tennessee River?”
2. Maps issued to Civil War field officers were sometimes printed on what substance other than paper?
3. What Union general was nicknamed “The Pathfinder?”
4. Who served as chief-of-staff for Union general William Rosecrans at the time of the Battle of Chickamauga?
5. (Two point question) Who were the only two foreign-born (i.e., born outside the United States) Confederate officers to rise to the rank of major general? (You must name both to get two points. No partial credit will be given for getting one but not the other.)
Answers to the questions for Week 1 will be due by 6 PM EST on Saturday, February 24.
Good luck!

Life is not about waiting out the storm. Life is about learning to dance in the rain.
On question # 2, please try to be as specific as you can in naming the substance. For example, an answer of "wood" will be considered insufficiently specific - if you think the maps were printed on wood, you have to tell me whether they were on pine, oak, maple, or some other specific type of wood.
Similarly, an answer of "stone," or "cloth," or "metal" would be considered insufficiently specific - if you think the maps were printed on any of those, you have to name the type of stone or cloth or metal on which the maps were made.

'It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag'

A good showing by those of our players who managed to fight their way through the ice and snow to get to their computers this week. Of the seven players who submitted answers to the questions for Week 1, there was only one incorrect answer in the bunch.
Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1.
1. The quote is attributed to Albert Sidney Johnston, whose prophecy went unfulfilled.
2. My source indicated that maps were sometimes printed on either linen or muslin, so I accepted both answers. Printing on these substances facilitated washing the maps when soiled, a not uncommon necessity. It also made them more durable and easier to fold.
3. The Pathfinder was John C. Fremont.
4. Future President James A. Garfield was Rosecrans’ chief-of-staff.
5. Patrick Cleburne (Ireland) and Camille Armand Jules Marie, Prince de Polignac (France) were both Confederate major generals born outside the U.S.
