Is the SCV as a serious historical preservation organization dead? I fear so...
SCV seems to have some internal problems still.

Few take the trouble to understand or to view the American scene with perspective. And we Americans love to find ourselves guilty of something. However, it is never I who am guilty, but those other Americans, the past or present government or the other political party. Americans almost never find other countries guilty. It is always ourselves or our fancied influence in other countries. Louis L'amour
I saw that in the paper the other day.. I'm not sure what the future will bring with the SCV but Oe thing is for sure I know my family history and I will fight tooth and nail to preserve their memory be they union or confederate soldiers
History is being erased before our very eyes its up to us to up and keep this from happing they may of had diffrent views but they were both americans and with out them I would not be here today.

Steven,
That seems to be the main issue, to preserve the history and memory of the Confederate soldier or engage in a present-day political agenda. Although at times, it may be impossible to do the one without a bit of the other.

Unionblue, for a yankee, you're well informed, which is more than I could really say for the guy who wrote the article in the Tennessean. If there is a split in the SCV, it is a small stress fracture at most. There is considerable evidence, this Board among the lot, that interest in the American Civil War has grown substantially in recent years. I'm afraid actual knowledge of the War has sagged a bit, as we have discussed before. Part ot the goals and function of the SCV are to assist with keeping the memory of the men of the Confederacy 'alive' and to do so in a manner as accurate and pleasing as possible. Lot's of folks with less knowledge than they could use, or at least a slightly warped version of the facts, seem to be stepping on SCV toes, including a group of folks in the press trying to gain readership. I vote for bird owner's making greater use of the newspapers if possible.
I read an article today claiming that the SCV in annual meeting here in Nashville appropriated $10,000 for defense of the name change of the Memphis Parks and apparently also the potential re-location of the Forrests. (Nat and Mary) What a waste of hard-earned funds. While I agree with the sentiment to leave these folks alone, there are far more productive goals for the SCV to be pursuing such as simple education and promotion of facts before the public that explain the heart of the SCV movement and make it obvious that many (hopefully all) of the negative comments often written really aren't the case in reality. Us grannies would prefer to avoid so much controversy. It's understandable that the good citizens of Memphis proper at this time in history aren't exactly fans of Forrest. Tolerance works both ways and I hope they will remember the exaltations of Dr. King eventually.
Here's a link to the article I think you're talking about:
