Well Neil, As I agree with some of the voices that stated that it was war crimes against the people of the South and as much as I believe that we are still the only group that it is "cool to hate", as one signee stated .... I can not and would not sign this .... Not for money .... I would sign it tho to bring attention to the fact that the war crimes happened .... I think acknowledgment of that should be done .... I also think that people need to be taught more than one side of the war .... but then again this is just my humble opinion jumping out again.

Even if they manage to win the reparations how are they planning on dividing it fairly among the ones on the petition? There is no way to prove how much damage a certain family had suffered and there is always going to be someone who always claimed that they didn't get their fair share.Even with significant proof it took General Lee's descendants into the 80s to be compensated for Arlington.

And what about the Yankee's that suffered from 'war crimes'?
And who's going to actually pay the 'bill'. People of the North? Then you can't 'tax' anyone came here after the war. And what about families with members on both sides, they going to pay a ratio based on family fighting on each side?
I think a better idea is to have the families of the leaders that led the South into secession. Hmmm! But that won't work either. They will claim, and rightly so, that they are not responsible for their ancestors actions.
I think the only thing, money wise, would be to call it dust and let the rain settle it.
But seriously, I think Kat has the right idea about the acknowledgment of war crimes, but...it has to be done fairly and presented for both sides.

Ms Katherine... when you can show me the Final Solution for the South, or an equivelant to what happened in Bosnia or Iraq... then mayhaps I'll accept your claims of War Crimes. Some on this board have compared Shermans March to the Sea to Hitlers Final Solution. That is so naive as to be insulting. I think people have forgotten what true evil was/is... Lincoln was no Napoleon, Hitler or Saddam to suggest so is beyond the pale. I should add, Neither were those of the South.

Will the South pay the Reparations some ancestors of slaves are asking? I think not.. the sins of the ggg grand dad are just that. Enough entitlements, lets get on w/ life.

That said Ms Katherine is correct, people deserve to be taught both sides of the war, it takes two to fight and what a fight it was.
Few take the trouble to understand or to view the American scene with perspective. And we Americans love to find ourselves guilty of something. However, it is never I who am guilty, but those other Americans, the past or present government or the other political party. Americans almost never find other countries guilty. It is always ourselves or our fancied influence in other countries. Louis L'amour

Aren't they being facetious? For instance, when the descendents of the former slaves want reparations, do we deduct if they have any non-slave in their blood? Furthermore, do we tax the Afro-Confederates who owned slaves so as to help pay reparations. The entire mess is a genelogical nightmare and the feasibility of the decree is very unpromising.
