Default A.J. Hughes, Co B 65th GA Infantry Regt

Yesterday, my supervisor sent me out to inspect state historic markers that my park is responsible for. I made a neat discovery that just down hill from one of our markers in the Marietta, GA Confederate Cemetery lies the grave of my great, great granduncle Andrew Jackson Hughes.

AJ Hughes served in Company B 65th GA Infantry. He enlisted in Morganton, GA in August 1863, and saw his first action at Chickamauga. After the battle, he had spent time in a hospital in Madison, GA. When he returned to his command, he served briefly as the Colonel's orderly.

During the Atlanta Campaign, Andrew served through actions such as Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, and battles around Atlanta. During the fall if 1864, he became sick, and had to be hospitalized in Cuthbert, GA and missed the Battle of Franklin. After he recovered, he rejoined his command, and surrendered in NC.

After the war, Andrew returned to the Rock Creek area of Fannin County, and resumed his occupation as a farmer. In his later years, rhumatism had set in, and he was allowed a pension on his war service. In 1915, Andrew was admitted to the Georgia Confederate Soldiers Home in Atlanta. He remained there until his death in 1930.

Attached is a photo of his grave.

Thanks very much for your post and thanks for your efforts in preserving the memory of the Confederate soldier and perpetuating the maintenance of parks in Georgia! My ancestor Private Whitfield Monroe Parker with the 63rd Virginia Infantry likely knew this man. By the way, welcome to Civil War Talk. Many good folks on this board, please enjoy your stay.

Thanks for your kind words, Larry! Many members of the 65th GA deserted it's ranks, and after Franklin, it was consolidated with the 2nd GA Sharpshooter Battalion.
