Default A good source of Information

The other day, I was lucky enough to find a copy of the first of 5 volumes of the Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana. With in this first book, the information contained is very intresting. Later volumes list the disposition of man men that were in the states service. Usually these reports contain complete rosters of the regiments, where they were formed how many were mustered out etc.

There are also quarter master reports and costs of arms and equipage listed as well as where these items were purchased. Many times, promotions are listed as well as POW lists and exchange lists.

In the case of the Indiana reports, a lot of information as to activities that took place inside of the State. Actions of disloyal citizens, deserters, and other factions are listed. What was done to protect the border along the Ohio River and several raids that both sides took part in. Names of men involved in these actions are also listed.

It is well worth while to seek out these reports that each state provided. The information found in them can be very helpful.

Is this available online, or does it cost an arm and a leg?

Sam, I made an error, this copy that I have is the first of 8, not 5 that I purchased. I found it on Ebay. I wish the complete set were on line but they are not. Our State Historical Society has sets for reference and many library's have them in the reference sections. Here is an idea that just came to me. We should all write to our respective Historical Societies and request an electronic copy of these records. In doing so, suggest that this would be a good money maker for them.
