Default Regimental and Company Rosters

There seems to be a great disparity between different states as to the accessibility of regimental and/or company rosters for Civil war units.

In all my reseaching so far, I find the best are for Tennessee and Illinois. For Tennessee, tngenweb.org is excellent, just about all one would need, USA and CSA alike.

http://www.tngenweb.org/civilwar/tncwindex.html

For Illinois, it is hit and miss. There are several sources, but each has it'sdrawbacks.

The Illinois Civil War Project is one

Illinois in the Civil War has a search function that doesn't work

Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls Database has a search function that does work.

I have expected at least as good as these for NewYork, and other states, but can't find such.

If you know any, why don't you all suggest sources of these kinds of rosters which you have found useful for as many states as you can.

We could wind up with a nice list for folks to work from.

The problem is that many states want you to buy their CD Rom version of the Stet's OR. My experiance is that those are well wirth the money. For certain the Iowa & Minnesota ones are.

Add these to your list though:

That's a fantastic idea, Sam. There's a great site for the Pennsylvania folks, I'll look it up again later and post it. The lady who runs it has done a great job of posting muster rolls, and there are many links to other databases as well. It's the best state site that I've seen on the web.

Johan, I haven't had any luck either with New York, which is very frustrating.

If anyone has found links for Civil War info relating to Rochester, NY, Columbus, OH, Cincinnati, OH, Pittsburgh, PA and Philadelphia, PA, I'm definitely interested. They were recruiting points for the regiment I'm currently researching.

Missouri Sec of State links to the ADJ GEN site. You can search by name for Union Missouri Soliders, but not for Cornfeds or State Guards. They also have lists of all Union Volunteer Regiments, Home Guard Companies, Missouri Enrolled Militia, and Missouri Provisional Enrolled Militia. Some Muster rolls are available but it's ify.

The Mo SOS also has the records for the Union Provost Marshals available on line. Searchable by name or county. If you have a side of your family who was in trouble with the Yankees (Like me) it can be insightful.
